Tree Removal in Bowmanville & Durham Region

Removals done by climbers who know how to rig, backed by a Merlo grapplesaw telehandler for the trees nobody wants to drop by hand. Fully insured, cleaned up properly.

What a removal actually involves

Most removals are not a matter of cutting a tree down. In a Bowmanville backyard or an older Oshawa neighbourhood there is a fence, a shed, a hydro drop, a neighbour's sunroom and a garden the homeowner has spent years on. The tree comes out in pieces, from the top down, and every piece is either rigged and lowered on rope or picked off by machine. The felling itself is the fast part. The planning, the rigging points and the drop zone are what take the time and what keep the job boring, which is exactly what you want.

We start with a walk around. Where does the tree lean, where is the decay, what is the target if a piece goes wrong. Ash killed by emerald ash borer is its own category: the wood goes brittle and the union between limb and trunk fails without warning, so a dead ash gets treated as a machine job rather than a climb whenever we can reach it. Silver maples split at codominant stems. Old Manitoba maples hide rot in the butt. Norway spruce holds a lot of weight out at the tips. None of that changes the price on a quote sheet by itself, but it changes how we take the tree apart.

The equipment, and why it matters

The Merlo grapplesaw telehandler is the machine that does most of the heavy lifting on our jobs. It grabs a section, cuts it, and carries it out under control, so a two-tonne limb never swings on a rope over a roof. It reaches where a bucket truck cannot get set up and it fits through gaps a crane truck would never make. We have taken sixty-foot trees out of the gap between two houses with it. That is the difference between a removal that needs your fence panels pulled and one that does not.

When the machine cannot reach, a climber goes up. Ropes, friction devices, speedlines over a garage roof, sections lowered one at a time to a groundie who moves them clear. Chipper on the street, chips blown into the truck, logs cut to stove length or hauled off, whichever you want. We would rather do a slower, controlled takedown than a fast one that costs someone a roof.

What affects the price

Size is only one factor. The things that really move a quote are access, targets and disposal. A big maple in an open field is cheaper than a medium one hemmed in by a pool, a hot tub and a chain link fence, because the field tree can be dropped whole and processed on the ground. Machine access down the side of the house, whether we can get the chipper close, how far we have to carry brush, whether hydro needs to be sleeved or dropped by the utility, and whether you want the wood left, all of it counts. Stump grinding is quoted separately because not everyone wants it, and grinding depth depends on whether you are replanting, laying sod or pouring a pad.

Every quote is free and done on site. We do not price removals off a photo, because a photo does not show the drop zone. You get a number, what is included and what is not, and no pressure either way.

On the day

We show up in the morning, confirm the plan with you, and tape off the work area. Vehicles get moved off the driveway, gates get opened, and pets stay inside. The crew works to one person calling the cuts. Most residential removals are a single day. Larger multi-tree jobs or lot work run two or three. If we hit something unexpected, a hidden cavity, a wire we did not know about, we stop and tell you before we keep going rather than after.

Cleanup is part of the job, not an extra. Brush is chipped, the logs go where you asked, ruts get raked out and the lawn gets blown off. The standard we work to is that a neighbour walking by should not be able to tell a crew was there, apart from the missing tree. We are fully insured, and we will send proof of insurance before we start if you want it on file. Ask for it. Any outfit that hesitates should not be in your yard.

Storm and emergency removals

Trees do not fail on a schedule. When a limb comes through a garage roof or a trunk is leaning on a hydro line after a windstorm, call and we will tell you honestly how fast we can be there. Emergency work gets prioritized, and we will make the site safe first, then deal with the rest of the tree once the hazard is off your house.

Tree removal questions

What makes one removal a bigger job than another?

Access more than size. A tree you can park a truck beside and drop in one piece is straightforward. The same tree in a back garden, over a conservatory, with a service drop through the crown, has to come apart in small rigged pieces and takes far longer. Height, lean, species, how much wood has to leave the site and whether the stump is being ground all change the job too. Tell us what you are looking at and we will come and quote it properly.

How long does a removal take?

Most residential removals are half a day to a full day including cleanup. Tight access, multiple trees or crane work can run to two days. We will give you a realistic window at the quote rather than an optimistic one, because we would rather you planned around the truth.

Do I need a permit to remove a tree on my own property?

Sometimes. Municipalities across Durham Region and Northumberland County have tree by-laws, and conservation authority rules apply near watercourses, wetlands and valley slopes. It depends on your municipality, the zoning and the tree. We will tell you plainly when a job looks like it needs checking before anyone starts.

What happens to the wood and the brush?

Brush is chipped and either hauled away or left on site as mulch, whichever you prefer. Larger wood is cut to length and stacked where you want it, or taken away. If it is good hardwood and you burn it, say so and we will leave it in usable lengths.

Will your equipment wreck my lawn?

Not if we plan for it. On soft ground the options are spreading the load with boards, working off the driveway, or doing the job by climbing instead of bringing a machine in. If the ground is genuinely too wet, booking for a dry spell beats leaving you ruts to repair.

Is the stump included?

Not automatically, because plenty of people want the stump left. Say so at the quote and we will include grinding in it, which also means it can be done in the same visit rather than bringing a grinder back separately.
