Where we work in Grafton

The village along the old Highway 2 corridor, the properties either side of it, the rolling farm country north through Alnwick/Haldimand toward Centreton and Roseneath, and the lots running south toward Lake Ontario and the shoreline road.

On the pricing, plainly: Port Hope and Cobourg cost the same as Bowmanville, but Grafton is over an hour each way. On a larger job it generally makes no difference. On a small one there may be an allowance for the drive, and you will be told what it is at the quote rather than finding it afterwards.

Heritage village trees

Grafton is old. Barnum House just outside the village was built between 1817 and 1819 and is the earliest Neoclassical house in the country, which gives you the measure of how long there have been properties here. Trees that went in alongside houses of that era are now very large and very close to buildings that matter.

Mature Sugar Maple over rooflines, big Ash, White Pine, Black Walnut, and on the older properties deliberate estate planting that somebody chose generations ago. Those are assets and are usually worth keeping rather than removing, and keeping them means deadwood out, selective thinning where a crown has closed up, and rubbing or badly attached limbs dealt with, on a cycle of a few years.

Drumlin country and farm work

North of the village the land rolls hard. This is drumlin country, long low hills running the same direction, and that changes tree work more than people expect. A tree on the side of a drumlin has its weight distributed somewhere other than where you would guess, machine access is limited to one or two approaches, and the landing zone for a drop runs away downhill.

The farm work here is the familiar list: shelterbelt rows of Norway Spruce and White Cedar planted decades ago with dead lower thirds and gaps, old Maple laneways, and fence line that has quietly become full hedgerow. Maintaining a windbreak beats replacing it, because a gap funnels wind faster than open ground does.

Where it is bigger than that it is lot and brush clearing: reclaiming a grown-in field edge, opening a building envelope, or clearing scrub off ground nobody has touched in twenty years. Laneway and roadside clearance goes with it.

Storm work at this distance

We run 24/7 storm and emergency response out here the same as anywhere else, with one honest caveat: Grafton is over an hour away, so we will tell you truthfully how long we will be rather than saying we are on our way when we are not.

Emergencies are quoted on site rather than on a flat rate. Out-of-hours work on a damaged tree is a different job to the same tree booked for a quiet weekday: higher risk, worse light, and often a crew pulled off other work. Ask what it will come to before anything starts and you will get a straight answer. We will not use the situation to sell work that does not need doing.
