On the pricing, plainly: this is over an hour from the yard. On a larger job that generally makes no difference. On a small one there may be an allowance for the drive, and you will be told what it is at the quote rather than finding it afterwards. We would rather say that here than have it be a surprise.

Drumlin ground changes the job

This is drumlin country: long low hills all running the same direction, left by the ice. It changes tree work more than people expect. A tree on the flank of a drumlin carries its weight somewhere other than where you would guess from standing at the bottom, machine access is usually limited to one or two approaches, and a drop zone runs away downhill rather than staying where you put it.

It also changes what grows where. The hilltops drain fast and the hollows between them hold water, so you get drought-stressed trees and waterlogged ones a couple of hundred metres apart on the same property. Sugar Maple, Ash, White Pine, Black Cherry and Basswood through the higher ground, Cedar, Willow, Poplar and Manitoba Maple down in the wet.

Rice Lake exposure and the shoreline lots

The properties down toward Rice Lake take weather straight off open water, and it shows. Windburn on Cedar, one-sided growth on anything young, and mature trees leaning consistently with the prevailing wind rather than randomly.

Shoreline work has its own constraint on top of that: anything close to the water runs into conservation authority regulation covering watercourses, valley slopes and flood-prone ground. It is worth asking that question before work rather than after, and we will say plainly when a job looks like it needs checking first.

The other shoreline pattern is young trees still staked from planting years ago. If yours has a strap still on it, take it off. A tie left on girdles the trunk, and removing it is a five minute job that saves the tree. More of that kind of thing is on the tree preservation page.

Farm work and storm work at this distance

The rural list here is the familiar one: shelterbelt rows of Norway Spruce and White Cedar with dead lower thirds and gaps, old Maple laneways, fence line grown out into full hedgerow, and field edges walking outward a little further every year. Maintaining a windbreak beats replacing it, because a gap funnels wind through faster than open ground.

Where it is bigger than maintenance it is lot and brush clearing or forestry mulching, which is the right tool for scrub, trails, pasture coming back in and Buckthorn taking over an understorey.
